The Tradition of Jumping the Broom

June 25, 2020

Have you ever witnessed a couple jump the broom at the end of the ceremony? Or wondered exactly what jumping the broom means? An officiant at one of our weddings explained why some couples choose to jump the broom and what it means. For years, I’ve wondered why some couples choose to jump the broom. It’s more than just a tradition and pretty decorated broom!

Jumping the broom is a wedding tradition in which the bride and groom jump over a broom during the ceremony. The act of jumping the broom symbolizes a new beginning and a sweeping away of the past! It can also signify the joining of two families or offer a respectful nod to family ancestors.

Knowing the reason behind it makes the tradition even more special!
