Being a natural light photographer

August 13, 2015

A lot of people wonder what it means to be a natural light photographer. It’s actually exactly how it sounds. One of the first weddings I ever photographed was my sister’s wedding. It took place at White Deer park in Garner on a covered patio. I fell in love with outdoor wedding photography and knew that I wanted to incorporate it every chancee I got. Then after much research and meeting other photographers, I realized that I shared a common love for being a natural light photographer. Here’s what it all means.

What does it mean to be a natural light photographer?

Being a natural light photographer means that I use natural, outdoor lighting whenever I can. All of our engagement sessions are photographed outdoors during the evening or early morning hours. These are the two times that I have found work best for our style. On the day of a wedding, I like to make time for a few outdoor photos. Even if it’s extremely hot, raining, or cold, I feel that it’s important that we get outside for at least a few photos.

Do I use flash and other lighting?

I most certainly do! I actually enjoy using on camera and off camera lighting. Especially off camera lighting. When it comes to photographing an indoor or nighttime reception, flash is a must have. I just love the way off camera flash adds another dimension to my photographs.

Until next time, have a great weekend everyone!
