Destin Family Vacation

This past December, we took a spur of the moment trip to Destin, Florida! This was our first Destin family vacation and we had a great time! It’s actually kind of funny! I’d been eyeing Destin for our next summer trip, but when my Dad mentioned taking a road trip before Christmas, we decided to visit Destin a little earlier than planned! In my head, we’d be enjoying warm weather for a few days! It’d been so cold in NC that we were really wanting to enjoy some warm weather! Instead of warm weather, we found cold and windy weather in Destin! We still had a great time away from home!

It took a couple of days to plan everything out! Traveling in an RV is a little different from traveling via car or plane!  The drive to Destin is about 11 hours for us and I knew that we’d need to find a place to stop on the way there and back to rest! We decided on Creekfire RV Resort in Savannah, GA! It’s an adorable rv park with lots to do! It was freezing both days that we were there but it’d be a lot of fun during the summer months! There was a tennis and basketball court, playground for the kids and a lazy river! It was a great place to spend the night on our way to Florida!

We chose to stay at Destin West RV Resort in Destin, FL! It’s a really cute rv park right on the bay! The beach was just across the street! We visited the beach on our second day just to check it out! It was freezing and quiet but I can imagine it’d be beautiful and busy during the summer!

We visited the Gulf Breeze Zoo near Destin! This was our family’s first time visiting a zoo! Crazy, I know! The kids loved feeding the animals, especially the giraffes and goats! I loved the bird cage with all of the budgies! I had no idea what a budgie but I had way too much fun feeding and letting them land on me! One tried to eat Brian’s clothes and my shoe! It was hilarious and a little frightening at the same time! We definitely recommend checking out Gulf Breeze Zoo if you’re on the Emerald Coast! We had a great time seeing all of the animals! After grabbing food at Dewey Destin’s Seafood Restaurant, the kids grabbed ice cream at a nearby shop! We spent the evening listening to music and checking out holiday lights at Baytowne Wharf!

The next day, we packed up the RV, dropped off our rental car and took the drive back to Savannah, GA! I really wasn’t expecting the windy conditions when we woke up the next morning! It was expected to be one of the coldest days of the fall! Driving the RV home that day was one of the longest drives ever! Just imagine driving 45-50 mph on I95 from GA to NC! It was so windy! Anything faster than 45mph had the RV blowing around on the highway! It was one of the toughest drives I’ve ever experienced! And that’s saying a lot! I used to drive buses in college but I had never experienced anything like that! Thankfully, we made it home safely!

Our first long road trip was definitely an adventure! I can’t wait to see where the road takes us next time!
