Q & A with a Raleigh Makeup Artist

February 6, 2018

Doubletree Brownstone wedding photosI’m so excited to share this young lady with you! It seems like it was just yesterday that we were celebrating with her and her husband on their wedding day! Now we’re cheering her on as a Raleigh makeup artist! Read on to learn more about the owner and makeup artist behind Beauty by Jeanri!

How long have you been a makeup artist?

I’ve been doing makeup on myself for a total of about 10 years. I didn’t start to do makeup on other women until about 7 years ago. Thats when I would say I actually considered myself a freelance makeup artist. It wasn’t something that I did full time but I truly enjoy enhancing womens beauty.

How did you get started?

When I was in college, I did my own makeup! It wasn’t until I started getting questions about makeup and girls asking me to do thier makeup for events that I even considered it may have been something I was talented in. After I did a few faces, a couple of organizations invited me to do a makeup/skincare event for campus and that’s where I think I fell in love. I started a blog from there and a Youtube channel. I enjoy educating and trying new products. I love everything about cosmetics. My Mom sold Mary Kay for 35 years, starting before I was born. So I used to accompany here for her skincare sessions and makeup workshops. She even has a video of me getting caught putting on her makeup when I was 6 years old. That’s where my true passion started.

What advice would you give to brides looking for a makeup artist?

Do your research and take your time! That is your special day and the most important part of that whole day is how you look. It will be in remembrance in your pictures for the rest of your life. Make sure you thoroughly look at thier portfolio whether that is an official website or social media. Also, when you schedule your consultation speak up about what you like and don’t like! Ask questions about products used especially if you have sensitive skin. I always let my brides take control of our session! It doesn’t matter what I think would look great or not, it’s about what the bride wants and that’s the most important thing. Lastly, make sure your MUA has a niche for natural makeup. The purpose is to make you look like yourself but enhanced. If your MUA has done those things, she is the one for you!

What are some of the biggest challenges brides face that you have learned about makeup/makeup artist?

Well definitely crying on their wedding day! Nothing is worse than imagining your mascara running before you even get to your pictures. I use all waterproof products and always a setting spray to hold everything in place! I also always provide that comfort to my brides during the consultation. It’s important to have open communication with your MUA and that she is flexible! If you decide to change your makeup look, you have to feel comfortable enough to have that conversation with her. I think overall, having a relationship with your Makeup Artist is important! One that truly cares about each of her brides special day, makeup and her skincare! Feeling stressed about a wedding and then having acne breakouts and being able to reach out to your MUA for advice on skincare products can save a lifetime of pictures for you and your family!
